Essence have once again dropped the bomb with some amazing new makeup goodies and as soon as I saw the new Essence Matt Matt Matt Lipgloss range I just couldn’t wait to try it! The collection comes in 5 creamy textured lip glosses but I decided to only purchase 4 of the 5 as the 2 red one’s looked very similar.
Before I purchased these I assumed they were like liquid lipsticks and as soon as I started trying them on I suddenly became very disappointed, I suppose that will teach me to read up on products before buying them! The reason why I was disappointed was because this is a matt LIPGLOSS and not a LIPSTICK and I had different expectations from this product. Note that these are 2 very different things which means that the lipgloss will wipe off and doesn’t dry.
Nonetheless I gave them all a fair chance because unlike liquid lipsticks, the Essence Matt Matt Matt Lipgloss is creamy and non-drying on the lips which is always a bonus when wearing a matt lip product. Because they don’t dry, they are also very easy to remove and don’t stain your lips.
I’ve included swatches below so that you can get a feel of what each one looks like on my lips and also a brief explanation of what I thought of each one.
La Vie Est Belle:

When I bought these, this was my favorite as I’m obsessed with nude-pinky shades but this one didn’t apply as high-coverage as I expected. There was streakiness and because this doesn’t dry matt, you can’t really apply a second coat. It was really patchy and I didn’t like the way it looked.
Beauty-Approved!:

When I started applying this one it almost looked like it was the exact same colour as my natural lips which is kind of weird because when I was done applying it, it actually looked really nice and suited me so well. The coverage was better than La Vie Est Belle and it’s a wearable nude shade that will suit most people.
Girl Of Today:

I also enjoyed wearing this shade as the coverage was high and the product was easy to apply. I think this would be a nice every-day colour to wear.
Ready, Set, Impress!:

This was also a bit sheer and caused streakiness which I wasn’t too fond of. It’s like the very light shades and the very dark shades didn’t do too well in the coverage department.
These are without a doubt not bad products, if anything the 2 middle shades (Beauty-Approved & Girl Of Today) were quite wearable with a decent amount of coverage. As far as high-coverage and long wear goes, I’m not so convinced. They also require a fair amount of clean-up around the lips as they tend to smudge over the lip line. Also if you look closely at the swatches, they aren’t as matt as you’d expect them to be.
As much as I love Essence and about 90% of all their products, I’m not so sure I’ll be reaching for these again. They only retail for about R44.50 at most participating re-sellers so it’s really not a bad price for what you’re getting. If you’d like to try it for yourself you can buy it HERE.
♥ If a liquid lipstick that lasts all day is what you’re after, then this liquid lipstick is the one you want!

Thanks Melissa 🙂 Which ones did you end up getting? xx
I love Beauty Approved. I’ve seen people swatch these and I wasn’t super impressed with how hey looked. The red colour especially didn’t swatch well. I would try beauty approved though, because I like the colour.
Thanks for the honest review.

Yip definitely my preferred one out of the lot. I actually think these would do a whole lot better if the formula was made to dry. Next time Essence!
Hi ladies
I’m very disappointed with this lip gloss and wasted my time and money… Very unimpressed…
First thing that striked me was matte lipgloss which are two different things. Matte is a texture that suppose to be dry out on the lip and gloss is something that suppose have a sheer mosture on the lip. I was very disappointed because it was very smudgy and sheer. It was not matte at all. Its basically a lipgloss.
